Zane went to his first SF Giants game on Friday night. For those of you who know less about baseball than Gus does, Barry Bonds, the left fielder for the Giants, needed to hit 6 more home runs to tie the all time record of 755, which is still held by Hank Aaron. Although Bonds has been on the juice, hitting 749 homers is no small feat. Gus can't even hit a 50 mph fastball. Anyhow, Mama Zeiner thought that this game would be a great idea to commemorate her first day back at work. It turned out to be a minor disaster of overstimulation for a 4-month old.
We discovered that it is next to impossible to nurse during a game. Every time something would happen in the game, say Dave Roberts drops a fly ball for a 2 run error, and the crowd collectively deflated their lungs, Zane would lose the boob and start screaming. Calming Zane down required a trip to the bathroom to feed, where Mama Zeiner met a kindred breastfeeding mother who was similarly a refugee from the noise. Eventually Zane calmed down and nodded off, and the 14 year old sitting in the seat next to Mama Zeiner began to enjoy the game a little more. We were on the verge of leaving when Zane seemed pleasant enough, so we decided to stay.
On the way into the park, we were informed that since this was Zane's first game, we could head over to the customer service kiosk behind home plate in the club section and get a certificate commemorating his first game. Gus had totally forgotten about this by the second inning. At the top of the 8th inning, Dianna informed Gus that now would be the opportune time to retrieve said certificate. As she put it, the certificate would be "cute" for Zane's baby book. So off we went at the top of the 8th to retrieve this memento. Customer service turned out to be a good hike from our seats, and the top of the 8th turned into the bottom of the 8th. Since we weren't going to make it back to our seats and Bonds was walking up to the plate, we decided to watch the end of the game on the TV near one the the bars. Boom, homerun 750 shot into the crowd sitting at center-right field. So indeed we saw # 750, but despite the fact that we were at the game, we saw it just like everyone else in the world did - on TV.
This homerun tied up the game, so we did head back to our seats to see a possible overtime. In the 10th inning the Arizona Diamondbacks hit another homer and the Giants lost the game, but no one seemed to care because of Barry's hit. So we went home happy but in shock that we missed the main excitement of the game.
